Safety Precautions for Employees to Consider when in the Workplace

Employees working for companies should be aware of safety precautions to protect themselves from risks and prevent themselves from accidents within the working area. These safety measures must be practiced especially for those who are physically endangered to injury and even death in the workplace. Here are some precautions that company owners should address for their employees to be aware of what to do in case something untoward happens in the job premises.

1.It is the responsibility of management to orient all newly-hired and incoming employees of the safety measures practiced by the company. As soon as the employee is hired, there should be a program or committee that will take charge of the orientation as well as regular meetings for old employees to review these safety measures.

2.Employees should be alert in identifying potential hazards so that risks to them will be reduced if not prevented. If they see things that are considered unsafe actions, they should notify their immediate supervisors as soon as possible. This is done to avoid further damage and management and safety engineers can devise ways to remedy the problem.

3.As soon as a potential hazard is spotted, workplace safety procedures must be readily developed and implemented. For instance, employees should be aware of the location for emergency phones that can be used to report accidents and other emergencies.

4.Employees should be required to wear hard hats and safety goggles when there is a need; This is safety equipment that is specially needed for their protection.

5.Include in the safety measures that workers should always be careful when walking on slippery floorings, moving, lifting and carrying of objects, and using handrails when climbing stairs. The proper way of lifting by bending the knees and moving objects at eye level should often be reiterated to them as reminders.

6.Fire drills should always be done for employees to actively participate in identifying fire hazards, know their location and how to exit the building, learn to operate the fire extinguisher and learn what to do in case of fire.

7.When there is a crime committed within the working area, employees should not panic and have presence of mind, such as the act of discreetly sending a message to local authorities in case of robbery or hold-up.

8.Safety engineers in the workplace are the proper professionals to talk to and orient the employees of the risks such as in the use of heavy equipment, exposed to high temperatures, using corrosive and toxic substances, and in the case of medical workers, the risk of handling communicable diseased-patients.

By learning all of these safety measures and practicing them in the workplace, the risk of being exposed to danger is lessened if not stopped. Therefore, everybody in the work area has the responsibility to be aware, practice caution and work for the safety and protection of everyone in the workplace.
